WORKING FOREMAN -- ARBORICULTURE & CEMETERY

NATURE OF POSITION:
This is skilled supervisory work in coordinating, directing and participating in the work of a crew of skilled and semi-skilled subordinates engaged in arboriculture and cemetery operations tasks. Under the general direction of a superior an employee of this class is responsible for the quality, progress and completion of assigned projects and programs; supervises and participates in the work of subordinates; participates in preparing and monitoring budgets and in developing work plans and performance standards; and provides information, advice and assistance to clients regarding products and services offered by the cemetery. Considerable independent judgement and action is exercised within defined limits, but complex problems and policy matters are discussed with or referred to a superior who reviews work performance in terms of achievement of desired objectives and effective supervisory practices.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, procedures and materials, tools and equipment used in arboricultural and cemetery work.
• Considerable knowledge of trends in cemetery services and the related rules, regulations, policies and practices governing the work.
• Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.
• Sound knowledge of computer applications related to the work performed.
• Ability to plan, assign, coordinate, supervise, review and participate in the work of arborists and other subordinates engaged in various arboricultural and cemetery maintenance and service tasks.
• Ability to perform supervisory and arboricultural tasks with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work from blueprint plans and sketches, order materials and equipment, prepare related records and reports and utilize related software.
• Ability to develop draft work plans and performance standards and to assist a superior with redevelopment opportunities.
• Ability to prepare budget estimates, monitors costs, identifies and explains cost overruns.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts and to deal compassionately, tactfully and effectively with cemetery clients.
• Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the work.
• Completion of a diploma program in a field related to arboriculture plus sound related and supervisory experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia.
• Certification as an Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture.
This position is based on an eight (8) hour day -- forty (40) hour week and may be required to work more than five (5) consecutive shifts in a week or more than forty (40) hours in a week without overtime rates being paid. It is understood that appropriate overtime rates are to be paid only for all hours worked in excess of an average of forty (40) hours a week in a two (2) week period or for all hours worked in excess of eight (8) hours in a shift
