full time Recreation Program Assistant -- Special Needs (part time) (City of Port Coquitlam)

The City of Port Coquitlam is a rapidly growing urban municipality of over 57,000 residents, located in the northeast section of the Lower Mainland. Our Parks & Recreation Department is currently seeking enthusiastic, fun and creative individuals to join our Parks & Recreation team on a part-time basis as a Recreation Program Assistant in the area of Special Needs.

This is recreation leadership work in the area of Special Needs assisting in the development and execution and evaluation of recreation services and programs. Duties are performed in collaboration with a supervisor within established guidelines, practice and policies. Independent judgement is exercised on individual aspects of the program. Supervision including guidance and mentoring of staff is required. Work performance is monitored and reviewed by a supervisor in terms of the effectiveness of services rendered.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

• Assists in planning, developing, organizing, implementing and administering the operation and promotion of programs and services.
• Supervises guides and mentors the work of subordinates.
• Assists a supervisor in liaising with community groups and associations.
• Drafts promotional material for review and approval by a supervisor.
• Prepares and maintains equipment and supply inventory records in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Provides leadership and instruction for various programs and activities.
• Provides input and monitors the performance of contractors.
• May participate in the recruitment of staff and volunteers. Provides input into staff and volunteer evaluations.
• Assists with training and orientation of staff and volunteers.
• Assists with staff scheduling and shift coverage. Reviews timecards for accuracy.
• Drafts a variety of reports and maintains records related to the work.
• Assists with the development of new programs and implements programs.
• Assists with monitoring program budgets.
• Assumes responsibility for the operation and security of a recreation facility in accordance with the established policies and procedures on assigned shifts and or in the absence of a supervisor.
• Ensures the required standards of behaviour and safety are maintained.
• Resolves public service complaints in accordance with the established procedures, and difficult or unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

• Considerable knowledge of area of assignment.
• Sound knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of community recreation.
• Working knowledge of applicable requirements, policies regulations and standards governing work performed.
• Considerable knowledge of teaching methods and group leadership techniques emphasizing instruction in the area of assignment.
• Ability to deal effectively with concerns and issues related to the area of assignment.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with a variety of internal and external contacts.
• Ability to take initiative, employ independent judgement and exercise some supervisory duties.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally with a diverse group of individuals.


Requirements for this position are:

Completion of 6 post-secondary courses in Community Recreation Therapeutic Recreation or related discipline, three of which must be in the area of assignment (working with special needs, special needs programming and accessibility/inclusion)

Workshops/training relevant to the field totaling 14 hours. Examples include:
o FMRS 105 Understanding Family Diversity -- JIBC
o FMRS 106 Working with Vulnerable Families -- JIBC
o FMRS 107 Supporting Families with Special Needs -- JIBC
o FMRS 108 Program Planning and Evaluation -- JIBC
o BCRPA High Five Training
o Non-violent Crisis Intervention -- Port Coquitlam Parks & Rec

Six months supervisory experience or courses in leadership and/or supervision

One year full time equivalent experience in the area of assignment

Standard First Aid

Valid Class 5 BC Drivers License

The terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement. The hourly rate of pay for this casual position is $24.16 plus 16% in lieu of benefits, vacation and statutory holidays.
