COMMUNITY WORKER-TEMPORARY (VANCOUVER)

First United Church is an inner-city ministry of the United Church of Canada, located in the Downtown Eastside serving the needs of that community. First United seeks to model an inclusive community in which all are welcome. To that end, we are a low-barrier community and refuge welcoming those who are often unwelcome in other places and providing a place where people from any religious tradition or no religious tradition can find a sense of belonging. We are open 24 hours a day / seven days a week, 365 days a year. Currently we are seeking an exceptional "Community Worker" to fill a full-time temporary vacancy for our dedicated team.
Educational Requirements
• Bachelors degree or Masters degree in Social Work, Psychology or equivalent
Job Description
• Provide encouragement, emotional support, help and advice to community members, their families and communities, particularly focussing on addictions, mental health issues and abuse.
• Interview community members individually, in groups, and in families to fully assess and understand their situation and determine their needs going forward.
• Assist community members locate resources and services, and help them to develop a plan of action
• Develop and deliver focussed interventions and groups to encourage member-centred change.
• Provide crisis intervention when necessary
• Work with the current team to evaluate the effectiveness of current programs and counselling services provided and suggest improvements as required.
• In consultation with the Community / Social Services Worker team, help coordinate related services (mental health, substance abuse, other issues) for community members as required.
• Organise and plan programs that will assist the community members including liaison and referral to local agencies across Vancouver.
• Work with different agencies, external parties and professional associations to foster and develop an interdisciplinary focussed approach to community member care.
• Implement and organise groups and specific services based on the needs of the community
• Provide ongoing input and research into creative solutions for more actively meeting community needs, including being aware of relevant legislation and local community development opportunities.
• Be proactive in working with First United education services to provide oversight to external bodies in the above fields.
