Safety and Security Officer

We have an opportunity for a Safety and Security Officer within our Safety and Security Department at our Deltaport terminal, located in Delta.
Key Responsibilities
The Safety and Security Officer promotes and implements health & safety policies, procedures and guidelines.
You will be responsible for the following:
• Incident Reporting and Investigation:
o Administer all accident/incident reporting; co-ordinate Disability Claims Management; and review and verify all accident investigation reports for completeness and accuracy in a timely manner.
o Conduct and/or participate in accident investigation. Co-ordinate and conduct sectional health and safety audits. Perform assessments in accordance with established procedures. Inspect the physical aspects of terminal operations and office locations. Monitor safe working practices on an ongoing basis to ensure a high standard of excellence. Recommend corrective action related to hazardous conditions to the appropriate sources.
o Provide and maintain statistical data, reports and analysis of accident/incident trends to operations in support of accident reduction goals and continuous improvement of workplace heath & safety.
o Respond to inquiries and requests for information in an appropriate manner. Maintain accurate records.
o Maintain strict confidentiality and data integrity at all times.
• Compliance:
o Development and continuous improvement of Company safety policies, procedures and practices to ensure compliance with applicable Acts, regulations and industry leading safety practices.
o Monitor new and revised health and safety legislation to remain current with latest requirements. Demonstrate commitment to continuous learning and development; e.g., membership and active participation in Canadian Society of Safety Engineers.
o Maintain safety and security manuals, reviewing and updating annually to ensure compliance.
o Co-ordinate Health & Safety Committee activities, ensuring regular meetings and inspections are taking place, follow up action is being taken, and that required membership and certification requirements are met.
o Attend other meetings as required; e.g., BCMEA monthly meetings, CSSE monthly meetings.
• Training
o Deliver, co-ordinate and track health & safety related training such as WHMIS, safety orientation, etc.
• Other
o Maintain filing and database systems related to confidential records, correspondence files, reports, worker's compensation claims, etc.
o Prepare routine correspondence, reports, memorandums, minutes, and related material.
o Communicate/liaise with all departments and employees/unionized labour.
o Other duties as required.
Requirements:
You bring the following skills and experience:
• Solid understanding of safety and security.
• Working knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations; e.g., Canada Labour Code and WSBC
• Intermediate knowledge of MS Word and Excel.
• Consistent demonstration of a high level of confidentiality, integrity and professionalism.
• An understanding or previous experience in the Container Shipping Industry and Terminal operations is a strong asset.
You also bring advanced interpersonal skills, as well as your flexibility to multi-task. You are able to work in a self-directed manner, and are also able to work effectively with a team or work group. You have advanced verbal and written communication skills, strong organization skills and a proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
These capabilities have typically been developed through a relevant post secondary diploma or degree in a discipline related to health & safety, 3-5 years of experience in a safety and security role, or a combination of education, training and experience in a related discipline.
