FT Executive Director/Staff Lawyer Position
The West Coast Domestic Workers' Association ("WCDWA"), a non-profit organization
located in downtown Vancouver, seeks an experienced Executive Director/Staff Lawyer to
represent migrant workers in immigration and employment law.
Responsibilities:
This Role is a hybrid role consisting of Executive Director and Staff Lawyer responsibilities:
Executive Director Duties:
WCDWA's Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management
of the organization according to the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors.
The ED will be responsible for performing the following duties:
• The Staff Lawyer/ED will manage and supervise the WCDWA team;
• Ensure that the operation of the organization meets the expectations of its clients,
Board and Funders and oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of
the organization;
• In addition to the Chair of the Board, act as a spokesperson for the organization
representing WCDWA at community activities and conduct official correspondence
on behalf of or jointly with the Board as appropriate;
• Act as a professional advisor to the Board of Directors; prepare monthly meeting
agenda; attend monthly board meetings; and provide the Board with comprehensive,
regular reports on the revenues and expenditure of the organization;
• Oversee the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures and
practices including recruitment, interviews, hiring and performance management
process for staff;
• Work with staff and the Finance Committee to prepare a comprehensive budget;
ensure that sound bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed;
• Work with the Board to secure adequate funding for the operation of the
organization; research funding sources, oversee the development of fund raising
plans and write funding proposals;
• Provide monthly reports to WCDWA's core funder(s).
• Overview the completion of WCDWA's monthly newsletter.
Staff Lawyer Responsibilities:
The Staff Lawyer duties include assisting live-in caregiver primarily with the following:
• Immigration application with medical or criminal inadmissibility;
• Judicial Reviews to Federal Court of immigration decisions;
• Represent clients at the Immigration Appeal Division; and
• Attend interviews with clients at local CIC office.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will possess the following:
• Law degree from a recognized law school and be a member of the B.C. Law Society;
• Experience in managing, mentoring, coaching and developing professional
employees; and possess an extensive understanding of the legal system and delivery
of services and knowledge of operational planning and metrics;
• Experience working within a high volume, fast paced non-profit organization;
• Ability to be self-motivated and organized while supervising others;
• Be highly organized and able to manage a diverse and busy caseload;
• Anticipate, understand, and respond to the needs of internal and external clients to
meet or exceed their expectations within the organizational parameters;
• Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and
make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness;
• Ability to undertake advocacy duties in an ethical, professional manner and with
regards to confidentiality;
• Experience in Immigration Law. Knowledge of Employment Law would be an asset;
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively
communicate with persons of limited (English) literacy and comprehension; and
• Ability to speak Tagalog would be an asset.
