Platform Scalability Engineer (DemonWare / Activision) (Vancouver)

DemonWare, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, are specialists in creating client and server-side networking software and services for video games such as Guitar Hero, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. As a software services company we develop and deploy robust, scalable services to support millions of users often with often rapid turn around times.
Capacity, Scaling and Infrastructure Group
DemonWare's infrastructure consists of over 1,300 servers, 28 Gbps of bandwidth and 60 racks in three separate hosting facilities. Our services respond to over 100 billion API calls from gamers playing Activision's titles every single month. We are looking for exceptional candidates to help manage the growth of these services and the efficient utilization of our resources.
DemonWare's Capacity, Scaling and Infrastructure Group has three broad responsibilities:
1. To manage the design and build out of our datacenter facilities and networks.
2. Using data captured from both experiments and live systems, to build capacity models which allows us to order the optimum combination of hardware specifications and quantities.
3. To ensure that existing and future resources are utilized optimally and to provide troubleshooting expertise and advice on software and hardware scaling issues.
Responsibilities of the Platform Scalability Engineer:
• Development of standardized modeling framework for hardware platforms
• Evaluation of new hardware models and platforms
• Research into hardware and software tuning to optimize hardware utilization
• Load testing of new services and functionality to confirm appropriate resource utilization
• Engagement with vendors and consultants on solution design
Essential Requirements:
• Degree in Computer Science related topic
• 3+ years working with UNIX variants in a Systems Administration role
• Strong scripting skills, Python preferred
• In-depth and up to date knowledge of computer architecture and software scalability

• Proven ability to identify scaling limitations in large transactional systems
• Analytical and reporting skills
• Enjoys & works well researching open-ended problems
Desired Experience:
• MySQL performance tuning
• Experience in analytical/statistical programming languages (Matlab, R etc.)
• Datacenter deployment and management
