Serials Editor, Publications Department (Vancouver)

The Fraser Institute has an intermediate-level editorial and production position open in its Vancouver office.
Role & Responsibilities
Working under the supervision of the Director of Publications, this full-time position offers the opportunity to work in a busy department that publishes a wide range of documents both in print and on line. Specific duties include the following:
Your job will be varied and will entail handling several tasks at once. Part of the job requires you to edit and lay out our bi-monthly policy magazine, Fraser Forum, as well as several shorter quarterly newsletters. You will also be required to copyedit and lay out some of the Institute's other publications following the Institute's style guide. Working in conjunction with the graphic designer and production editor, you will use a standard typesetting program to lay out the text, tables, and graphs in the Institute's publications.
You will also be required to offer innovative ideas and solutions for our digital publications, including optimizing our existing documents for the iPhone and other mobile devices.
In addition, you will be instrumental in expanding our suite of digital newsletters and distributing them to a range of recipients using the e-mail delivery software Silverpop.
Required Skills
To be successful at this job, you will need to understand general economic and business principles, have a passion for publishing, embrace new technologies for disseminating information, and be an ardent advocate for clear communication. You must also understand the Institute's work and be drawn by a desire to help communicate its message clearly.
You will need sound editing skills, an appreciation of good typographical design, an understanding of both print and digital media, a desire to experiment and innovate, and experience with standard publication production procedures, including developing and using templates and scheduling and completing projects by tight deadlines. A degree in publishing, journalism, English literature, or a related discipline is expected. Experience with HTML and CSS and recent versions of Adobe InDesign, Acrobat, and Illustrator is also necessary; familiarity with other products in the Adobe Creative Suite and with Silverpop and Wordpress will also be an asset. Successful candidates will be comfortable working in a PC environment and appreciate the challenge of working in both print and digital media. You will work willingly as part of a team, but be flexible and able to work independently. Please be prepared to show a portfolio of your accomplishments.
