PARAGON TESTING ENTERPRISES operates in the highly competitive and rapidly growing industry for English proficiency tests and their instructional products and services. As a newly created subsidiary of The University of British Columbia, PARAGON aims to make its tests the Canadian tests of choice for placement in or admission to Canadian universities and colleges and for immigration to Canada.

The position below describes the responsibilities of an individual who will contribute to the PARAGON team environment in the area of instructional products development. PARAGON's instructional products include any printed or electronic materials that support candidates who are preparing to take one of PARAGON's tests of English language proficiency. Such products include practice questions and tests along with sample answers; study guides that can be used either individually or in group settings; preparation programs that provide insights as to how test candidates can gain the best possible performance in their test results; and any other suitable materials that can support candidates in their preparation for their tests. The Instructional Products Developer will be the primary individual within PARAGON who is directly responsible for helping PARAGON focus on expanding its array of support materials for its test candidates.

The position reports to the Manager, Test and Instructional Products Research and Development. The incumbent works collaboratively with other staff in this administrative unit and throughout PARAGON as well as external consultants who are or have been responsible for developing test questions and sample answers, study guides, and preparation programs and those who provide literary review of these support materials before these materials are made available to the public. The content of these materials will be reviewed for approval by other staff working in this administrative unit. The incumbent will be responsible for focusing attention among PARAGON staff and consultants on meeting critical deadlines and milestones in making its instructional test products available to test candidates in a timely manner.

Areas of responsibility included within individual job descriptions and reporting relationships will change as PARAGON adapts to its competitive environment, expands into new products and services, and grows in size. PARAGON employees should be ready and willing to work with the Management Team to redefine their areas of responsibility as required by the needs of the company.
The responsibilities of this position will largely be the development and revision of practice questions and tests, self-study guides, and preparation materials, but may include other responsibilities that arise as dictated by project needs.


Key responsibilities:

· Taking as inputs the test questions and tests that have been developed by other staff within PARAGON and the test answers that have been provided by past test takers to create practice questions, tests, and sample answers that PARAGON can offer to test candidates to help them prepare for their tests. These outputs can be posted free on PARAGON's website or combined into packages that can be delivered online for a fee.
· Taking as inputs the self-study guides, practice tests, and sample answers currently available within PARAGON to create new self-study guides that, after review for substantive feedback and suitable editing, can be offered to test candidates to help them prepare for their tests. These outputs can be posted in part for free on PARAGON's website, duplicated for sale in printed format, or made available online in electronic format for a fee.
· Taking as inputs the preparation programs, practice tests, sample answers, and self-study guides currently available within PARAGON to create new preparation programs that, after review for substantive feedback and suitable editing, can be offered to test candidates to help them prepare for their tests. These outputs can be posted in part for free on PARAGON's website, duplicated for sale in printed format, or made available online in electronic format for a fee. The electronic or printed preparation programs can be used in group settings either by PARAGON directly or by partner organizations that are delivering PARAGON's tests at their locations.
· Applying instructional design methods to the development and improvement of self-study products
· Developing style guides and providing formatting expertise for all self-study products
· Undertaking special projects and performing other related duties

Requirements:

· Portfolio of writing accomplishments relevant for position
o Textual materials (e.g., study guides and summaries of classroom learning modules)
o Teaching materials (e.g., English as a Second Language lecture materials, classroom exercises, homework exercises)
o Curriculum materials (e.g., course outlines and class outlines)
o Portfolios of writing accomplishments using both print and online formats would be an asset (portfolios should clearly indicate which materials were developed for each format)
· Academic requirements
o Bachelor's degree in field related to the position (e.g., English, education, etc.)
o Advanced degree or diploma in field related to the position (e.g., TESOL diploma) would be an asset
o Very strong academic record of accomplishment preferred

· Experience requirements
o Minimum five years experience teaching English as a Second Language is mandatory
o Minimum five years experience writing instructional materials to support a learning environment, such as creating curriculum and teaching materials
o Experience creating instructional materials incorporating Canadian English, that is, English as commonly used in Canada
o Experience writing instructional materials to help test candidates prepare for IELTS, TOEFL, or other similar English language tests would be a strong asset
o Experience developing online course materials would be a major asset
o Knowledge of the ESL testing environment would be an asset

· Abilities
o Ability to work both in teams and independently, with an understanding of how content development projects and timelines impact others on the team
o Ability to meet aggressive deadlines and milestones
o Effective multi-tasking and time management skills
o Strong attention to detail required in all aspects of the work processes
o Strong editing skills
o Knowledge of InDesign and ability to learn in-house software applications
o Strong work ethic to achieve company goals

· Other requirements and abilities
o Fluency in all components of English language, especially writing
o Canadian citizenship or permit to work in Canada

Position status: Full-time
Desired starting date: September 1, 2011
Location: UBC Point Grey campus, Vancouver
Salary: Negotiable depending on qualifications of successful candidate
