full time Computer Technician 2, Curriculum + Technical Support (Vancouver)

Permanent Full-Time Position
Monday to Wednesday 2:00pm-10:00pm / Saturday and Sunday 9:00am-5:00pm

Applications are invited for a Computer Technician 2 to provide weekend and evening technical, curricular, and client support related to campus wide Macintosh resources. Installs, configures, and troubleshoots workstations, peripherals, hardware and software. Secondarily, provides basic IT systems monitoring, troubleshooting, and reporting, as well as triage support for curricular, office and IT system equipment. Contributes to the research, development and implementation of maintenance and management processes for campus wide Macintosh resources. Provides orientations and follow-up technical instruction on the operation of equipment and software to clients. Participates as a member of the ITS Help Desk by fielding, logging, and responding to requests. Applicants will have:

• Two year certificate/diploma plus one year specialized and ongoing training, including Apple certifications related to servers, workstation support and deployment.
• Two to three years current experience supporting Macintosh computers, printers, and clients, preferably in a post-secondary environment.
• OR an equivalent combination of experience and education.
• Considerable knowledge of Mac OS workstation and server software, computer hardware and peripherals.
• Working knowledge with core networking technologies and protocols (OSI levels 2 and 3).
• Some experience with Windows, Linux/UNIX, and application software such as Adobe Master Collection, iMovie, FCP Studio, and MS Office.
• Basic knowledge of virtualization, network storage systems, print servers, network switches, tape backup procedures and SNMP monitoring.
• Proven ability to diagnose and resolve a wide range of computer and network problems using sound methodology.
• Ability to clearly articulate technical instructions to individuals and groups.
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication (written and oral) skills.
• Ability to make decisions with some independence, within policies and guidelines.
• Preferred background in, or familiarity with, technology used in art and design production.
• Technical writing skills preferred.

Some Typical Duties:
1. Responds with assistance and technical advice to questions from clients. Directly supports evening and weekend courses in computer labs. Supports curriculum activity in other areas of the campus when requested. Provides orientations and follow-up technical instruction to clients. Utilizes the ITS Help Desk for fielding, logging and responding to requests. Communicates issues, problems, and status reports daily to the supervisor.
2. Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems with operating systems, software, and computers/equipment. Images, installs, configures, and maintains software, operating systems, and computers/equipment. Implements and maintains physical security on deployed equipment.
3. Ensures campus wide ITS curricular resources are maintained in a secure, safe, clean, and functional manner. Maintains adequate supplies of printer consumables and other supplies. Liaises with Facilities and Security regarding lighting, storage, leaks, breakage, keys or other conditions of the building requiring attention. Reports any threats to safety, suspicious activities, and security breaches to campus security.
4. Monitors and promptly reports issues with campus network connectivity and ITS supplied services (email, websites, blogs, online courses, curriculum printing systems, tape backups, etc). Where possible, troubleshoots and corrects issues. Creates concise accurate reports of both corrected and uncorrected service issues. Escalates uncorrected issues by notifying ITS management.
5. In consultation with the Mac Curriculum Support Technician and Mac Administrative Support Technician, actively participates in researching, planning, configuring, testing, maintaining, and monitoring of systems used to image, configure, and maintain campus wide Macintosh resources. Participates in the creation and maintenance of installation package scripts and applications for use on campus equipment and client laptops. Researches and recommends solutions, equipment and software.
