Studio Technician 3, Communication Design (Vancouver)

Permanent Full Time Term Position (First to Last Day of Classes, Fall and Spring Terms)

Applications are invited for a Studio Technician to provide technical support to the delivery of Design curriculum with specific emphasis on assisting students to develop and articulate a range of software skills geared towards design production and output. Provides both group demos as well as one-on-one technical support for a range of production outcomes including print from the DOC and letterpress area, web-based text and video, ePublishing, and file preparation for output to other digital equipment such as laser cutters and polymer platemakers. Ensures area studios and equipment are appropriately maintained and properly functioning. Provides operational support for students seeking output from the area's printers, the DOC and the laser cutter. Monitors budgets, maintains and orders supplies and maintains records for the work area. Works as part of a team with other technicians and faculty in the area to recommend capital purchases, renovations and establishment of policies. Researches new equipment, products, materials and processes. Provides technical input into curriculum development as required. Assists faculty and students in the planning and preparation of the graduation show. Organizes the work, hires, trains and supervises student monitors and technical casual staff. Oversees the general security and safety of the area. Participates as a member of various committees. Applicants will have:
• University degree or equivalent specializing in communication design.
• At least two years job experience in communication design production.
• Practical working experience with a broad range of software, equipment, techniques and materials related to communication design production including prepress, colour management, binding and finishing, webpage creation, ePublishing, and letterpress.
• Previous job experience in a technical position supporting communication design at a post-secondary institution preferred, equivalent education and experience also considered.
• Thorough knowledge of communication design production and proven ability to build print and electronic documents to professional standards.
• Considerable knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop and Illustrator.
• Considerable knowledge of current Mac operating systems and Mac hardware.
• Knowledge of letterpress processes and techniques including the operation of polymer platemakers an asset.
• Flexible and creative problem solving skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively communication design processes and techniques.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish good working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
• Supervisory skills.
• Ability to make decisions with independence within policies and guidelines.
• Ability to lift and carry 22kg.
Some Typical Duties:
1. Under the general supervision of the Shop Technologies Manager and the Area Coordinator, provides technical support to the area and assists students to develop and articulate technical skills in support of the Communication Design curriculum.
2. Consults with faculty to create, schedule and deliver letterpress, polymer platemaker, laser cutter, and copier orientations and technical demos in support of curriculum. Demonstrates the appropriate and safe use of equipment.
3. Maintains letterpress and laser cutter area, as well as area photocopy equipment. Troubleshoots and repairs equipment where possible, and arranges for outside maintenance and repairs as necessary. Regularly checks Communication Design studios at Mitchell Press building.
4. Works with the DOC staff to ensure Communication Design students understand the requirements to achieve successful output. Assists students with software problems related to communication design, with specific emphasis on Creative Suite output.
5. Attends department meetings, presenting information as requested. Acts as an area liaison for student groups. Monitors Communication Design studio areas to ensure studios and classrooms are in an operational condition.
6. Maintains a budget for the area. Researches, orders, and maintains an inventory of supplies for the area. In conjunction with the faculty, researches and recommends capital purchases for the area.
7. Creates and maintains documentation of technical information, reference material, and handouts in print and electronic formats.
