Salary Range: Step Wage Scale starting wage $12.50 / hour
Placement: September 7, 2010 – June 29, 2011
Hours of work: 12-15 hours per week
Monday – Friday 2:30pm – 5:30pm

Situation:
The YMCA of Greater Vancouver is one of the Lower Mainland’s leading charities, with an operating
budget of more than $28 million and an aggressive capital development program. The YMCA provides
services in membership, childcare, camping, literacy, employment and community services to over 64,000
participants annually.
The Langara Family YMCA has a membership of over 8000 members in a 44,000 square foot facility.
Members, staff and volunteers reflect a very multicultural community in the South Vancouver area. We
offer a wide range of programs for all ages including swim lessons, summer camps, martial arts, yoga,
court sports, preschool, Healthy Heart, special events, leadership /educational courses and so much
more. The facility includes, swimming pool, racquet courts, full gymnasium, complete cardio and
weightroom and a studio for group fitness classes.
Nature and Scope:
Kids need 90 minutes of physical activity daily! The Langara Family YMCA Action Kids program is about
developing healthy habits now so children can learn to be active for life! The program will focus on
physical activity through athletics and fitness, and healthy habits through focusing on nutrition. This new
recreational program for children ages 5-12 starts September 2010 and takes place at the Langara Family
YMCA. Children will either be dropped off at the program, or if they attend Van Horne, Sexsmith, or
Jamieson Elementary Schools they will be picked up at school by our walking school bus and brought to
the program.
Reporting to the Youth Director, Program Staff will be responsible for planning and implementing daily
activities, as well as providing supervision and guidance to participating children. They will work as a
team, along with volunteers, to develop and deliver exceptional programming and care of children,
including building relationships with families.
Responsibilities: (including, but not limited to)
?? Directly lead activities geared towards physical activity and nutrition with children ages 5-12.
?? Develop programming that incorporates all YMCA core values and standards.
?? Respond effectively and timely to parent/guardian inquiries and requests.
?? Ensure development of all youth participants and pass this information on to parent/guardians.
?? Promote YMCA Action Kids in the schools and community.
?? Establish strong partnerships with schools and VSB staff through regular visits to office staff and site
contact.
?? Involve volunteers in program and ensure everyone is contributing to a team environment. Ensure
volunteers set a positive example at all time.
?? Adhere to all YMCA policy and procedures including accident and incident reporting protocols.
?? Responsible for transportation of children to and from elementary schools.
?? Ensure program sites are clean and safe before and after each session.
Qualifications:
• Postsecondary education in Recreation, Nutrition, or Physical Education or equivalent education and
experience an asset.
• Experience working with school aged children.
• Standard First Aid and CPR level C certification.
