The Vancouver Aquarium is a self-supporting, non-profit society dedicated to affecting aquatic life through interpretation, education, research and conservation. The Building & Construction department is currently seeking a well rounded carpenter to assist with various in-house projects. Hours of work will vary depending on project needs.

ROLE OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Manager of Building and Construction or designate this role provides carpentry services at the journeyman level related to the construction, alteration, installation, repair and maintenance of the Aquarium building, grounds and equipment.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
• Designs, builds and repairs facility structures; flooring, walls, fixtures, furniture and special construction projects.
• Maintains and upgrades facility structural changes; in accordance to building codes.
• Assists in the assessment, design, estimate and implementation of projects; determines scope, timelines, and material and progress reports.
• Designs and constructs transportation containers for safe transport of various live animals in accordance with the IATA; e.g. builds and maintains tanks for holding fish and other marine life.
• Coordinates and communicates with internal and external stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation of project requirements; e.g. working with security, department representatives and outside agencies and trades.
• Works with varying materials; wood, fiberglass, Plexiglas, plastic, glass Arborite, foam board and other materials as required.
• Maintains carpenter shop tools; orders and maintains required supplies and materials.
• Ensures highest standards of service and quality of workmanship.
• Tracks and reports on time and materials used.
• Carries a radio ensuring accessibility for calls.
• Assists with miscellaneous day to day building and facility requirements and special events; relocation and set up of furniture, equipment, stages, lighting, etc.
Performs additional duties as required.
• Maintains and actively participates in ensuring organizational safety standards in work areas and all public and private building areas; e.g. routinely inspects and reports issues.
• Completes appropriate project and incident paperwork and ensures work procedures are followed.
• Performs other duties as required.
• Continually improves our impact on the environment and greening of operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
• Grade 12 Diploma
• Carpentry Trade Certification.
• 3 years experience working in general carpentry setting.

Technical Competencies
• Required WHMIS Certification (or training within 6 months provided in-house)
• Required current knowledge of local building codes, regulations and safety standards.
• Intermediate design, drafting and estimating skills.
• Intermediate power tool skills.
• Intermediate constructions methods and skills.
• Basic MS Offices skills: Outlook, Excel, Word.
• Valid B.C. rivers license.
• Preferred Red Seal Certification or related technical certificates.
• Preferred Confined Space Certification or related/certificate.
• Preferred Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certification or related certificate.
• Preferred Chemical Spill Training (or provided in house)
• Strong project management and time management skills; ability to keep on task with strategic items while managing day-to-day responsibilities.
• Ability to lift and move 40 kgs.
• Ability to stand, bend, crouch, and climb. e.g. use of ladders.]
• Flexible with work shift: “on call” weekdays, evenings, weekends and holidays (occasional overtime.)
• Good judgment with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
• Follows direction, instructions and work order ticket system.
• Escalates issues to Manager of Building and Construction as needed.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; works well in a team and with stakeholders.
• Strong customer service skill.
• Active demonstration of the company’s values and mission

Working Conditions

• Exposure to varying conditions; indoor/outdoor, dust, fumes and odors from chemicals, noise from power tools, uneven or slippery surfaces etc.
• Occasional exposure to animals and fish.
