Information Technology Assistant (BC Nurses' Union)

SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and security of the centralized and multi-station network system of the BCNU offices. The position involves troubleshooting problems related to hardware, software and the network. This position plays a significant role in the ongoing support and maintenance of all data systems in the office. This position works with all staff to assess their computing needs and assists by researching technologies to meet those needs.
This position works under the direction of the Director of Information Technology.
DUTIES
• Configures and installs software and computers or notebook computers for staff, Council, and Regional Executives.
• Assists with design, implementation, training and ongoing support for software systems as assigned, including Unionware.
• Assists with the ongoing maintenance of all systems, including network backups, data transfers between systems, antivirus and computer upgrades.
• Assists with the security system backups, holiday programming and user maintenance.
• Works as part of the technology team to provide support for a variety of technology systems in the office, including but not limited to: web support, email and voicemail support, and troubleshooting systems.
• Communicates with Excluded Staff on technology issues ensuring software/hardware meet BCNU needs.
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of new software and recommends applications appropriate to BCNU.
• Uses initiative to predict, prevent and troubleshoot programs related to the systems responsible for.
• May be required to research hardware/software products.
• Performs and maintains expertise on SQL queries and produces reports from the results as needed.
• Writes simple user manuals and instruction sheets.
• Prepares and delivers computer training courses for staff and elected officers if required.
• Creates and maintains databases as needed, ensuring that databases integrate with other BCNU systems to centralize information for easier accessibility and data integrity
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Basic knowledge of computer hardware functions and overall computer operations.
• Basic knowledge of web technologies.
• Strong software skills using databases, office suite programs and windows.
• Experience with computer graphic and multimedia design.
• Good understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment while still working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to organize work and prioritize in a high pressure environment.
• Ability to operate related office equipment.
• Good analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Keen attention to detail.
• Strong customer service orientation.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of Grade 12. Graduation from a recognized institution with a certificate in Computer Sciences, with ongoing upgrading and training, plus three years related experience.
OR
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
