Support Worker, Durrant Transition House (South Surrey)

Position: Support Worker, Durrant Transition House
Status: Temporary until February 2010, Part time
Hours: Every week - Saturdays (7:30am – 4:00pm), Sundays and Mondays 12:00 am – 8:30 am.
Salary: $17.92/hr.
Location: South Surrey

An exciting opportunity exists for a Support Worker at Durrant Transition House with Atira Women's Resource Society. We are a feminist-based organization offering a challenging and rewarding work environment. An understanding of the dynamics of violence against women and other forms of oppression is an asset.
Qualifications:
Minimum one-year experience as a front-line support worker for women who have/are experiencing poverty, homelessness and violence/abuse. Must subscribe to a feminist analysis of violence against women and have a commitment to/understanding of anti-oppression work and the intersectionality of oppression. Must have a well-developed analysis of the impact/legacy of colonization and assimilation and the resulting impact on First Nations/Métis women. Must be open to working with women who have substance use issues and/or a mental health diagnosis.

• Advocacy
• Accompaniments
• Resource Referrals
• Liaise with other organizations & transition houses
• Keep Statistics
• Childcare and kids activities as needed
• Resident Activities and Outings
Skills & Abilities:
• Ability to provide non-judgmental support
• Flexibility
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to work collaboratively
• Ability to work under pressure/in crisis
• Ability to manage stress (self care)
• Ability to give & receive constructive criticism
• Ability to learn from experiences
• Knowledge of/commitment to Harm Reduction model of alcohol & drug treatment
• Knowledge of/commitment to Harm Reduction model of alcohol & drug treatment
• Ability to articulate a feminist analysis of violence against women
• Ability to articulate an aboriginal/Métis/First Nations’ analysis of the systemic and other issues that impact women and proactively support the women
Education
Formal education/credentials will count only as much as work experience.
Additional Requisites:
• A valid First Aid certificate is required.
• All positions are subject to a criminal records investigation.
• Must have a driver’s license and access to a vehicle while on shift.
• Confirmation of TB test
